About the Artist:
Andrea Williams is an undergraduate student at Long Beach State. She is from and currently living in Riverside, California. Since her days as a child music and art have been an important aspect of her life. She also can play the drums and was in a band. She is currently married and her husband encouraged her to work with ceramics. She really is excited to be a mother and own lots of pets. Her work explains the sacrifices of being a mother and explore ideas not commonly thought about including time and body.
Williams works with cement and ceramics. She creates a bumpy surface and then paints over with clean lines. Most colors included are reds and creams. Her pieces are very large and rugged. They created a very old and natural feel.
The exhibit mainly focuses on the idea of sacrifice which comes along with motherhood. She shows both physical and mental problems that comes along with giving birth. She body is physically changing and so does her mental views on life. She wanted people to notice things that are given up by bearing a child. She shows this by relating back to Jesus Christ.
I thought the work was very dark and I did not like it. I do not believe in using religious outlooks to prove your point. She was expressing her own thought and feeling but I also believe she was disrespecting Jesus Christ and religion as a whole.
